MICKEY BAKER "Session Man & Performer" Vol. 5

Here is final volume in this series of Mickey Baker's legendary work, compiled by Marty Mellow. (He just passed away November 27, 2012.) If you asked me, and I know you didn't, but if you did, I'd say Mickey "Guitar" Baker is the greatest guitarist in rock'n'roll history...
...Bob Quine agreed with me. (The Hound Blog)Of all the guitarists who helped transform rhythm & blues into rock & roll, Mickey Baker is one of the very most important, ranking almost on the level of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. The reason he isn't nearly as well known as those legends is that a great deal of his work wasn't issued under his own name, but as a backing guitarist for many R&B and rock & roll musicians. Baker originally aspired to be a jazz musician, but turned to calypso, mambo, and then R&B, where the most work could be found. (Allmusic)

The Halibuts "Halibut Beach" 1984

Mostly instrumental surf music with some ska influences.
Starting in the early 80's, South Bay los Angeles' own Halibuts played instro surf music when it wasn't even hip. All but one of the members in the band surfed, unusual at the time as well. This cd includes some instro ska/surf tunes as well as tradition instro surf tunes. There is even a few vocals thrown in for fun. These albums are raw and energetic like their live shows and are great fun! One of their members is now in the band Los Straightjackets. - cdbaby

My word, this band became one of my tops over the adventure across their 3 records, this one is such a healthy mix of fun, dort, emotion, exactly why I listen to music is for shit like this - ssurfinturd

Doyley & The Twanglords "Twang Solo" 2017

Sometimes you see an album cover and you are sure from the start that this one will make you happy, without having listened to a single note. You are right: With a Diablo Release it is even more safe to say, that disappointment is unlikely...
...However in the case of „Twang Solo“ it was the Artwork by Eugenio Magno, showing Doyley as one of my most important childhood heroes Han Solo surrounded by the deadly seed from „Day of the Triffids“ felt a lot like: This was made for me. I know, there’s a lot of people out there, that are rather sceptic concerning instrumental albums. Maybe this is one of the record that will convince people that it makes no difference if there are vocals or if it’s the guitar that sings. Believe me: The 21 tracks on „Twang Solo“ by DOYLEY & THE TWANGLORDS guarantee 100 % entertainment.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins "Something Funny Goin' On" 1993

He may be old, but he'll shake your walls if you play this loud enough. This cd is from 94 and is full of great songs, great singing and moments that'll make you laugh your [rear] off-like three bizarre musical interludes about Amy Fisher. This effort is a dizzying blast of overdriven guitars, crashing cymbals, and winding synthesized timbres. We tried to capture the less-than polished sound of our live shows with these recordings, embracing overdrive, mistakes, and imperfect timing in hopes of taking hold of some of that je-ne-sais-quoi inherent to real people performing live. We are not so self-assured as to be sure we wholly encoded our true selves into this music, but we'd like to think that we stamped in at least a few fragments.

Guantanamo Baywatch "Darling... It's Too Late" 2015 + "Mama" 2012 - 7"/45rpm

If you’ve been searching for your perfect summer soundtrack, you may look no further.
Portland's surfin' party punks Guantanamo Baywatch have learned a few tricks in the three years since they released their first album, and 2015's Darling... It's Too Late is in practically every respect an improvement on their well-meaning but not so thrilling debut, Chest Crawl. Guantanamo Baywatch have worked up a better set of songs this time out; "Jungle Bride," "Sea of Love," and "Beat Has Changed" outweigh anything on the group's debut, and guitarist Jason Powell has not only sharpened his six-string skills, he's come up with some snazzy instrumental numbers, and "Raunch Stomp" and "Shenanigans" should separate the cool cats from the ho-dads in no time flat. (Powell also cooks up a nice cover of Eddie & the Showmen's "Mr. Rebel" for the historically minded.) The production and engineering (courtesy of Ben Coleman, Justin McNeight, and Ed Rawls) are cleaner and tougher this time out, and bassist Chevelle Super Sport and drummer Christopher Michael Scott are a stronger, steadier rhythm section after a few years' practice. And while slightly bent surf music is still this band's stock in trade, the slinky R&B-influenced weeper "Too Late" (including a guest appearance by singer Curtis Harding) and the stomping dance number "Boy Like Me" show they're adding new levels to their game and making it work. At just 31 minutes, Darling...

"Mama" 2012 - 7"/45rpm" 2012
...It's Too Late feels a bit like a party that broke up before it really got into fifth gear, but this album is a much better expression of Guantanamo Baywatch's potential than their first long-player, and anyone who wished GB's music was as good as their ideas on Chest Crawl gets the payoff on Darling... It's Too Late. - AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

Screamin' Jay Hawkins "Feast of the mau mau" 1988 - DISC 2

"I hear those Voices again... I Smell Nookie!"... at least that's what I always thought he said... - BenT
Liner notes by Pete Brown 1988
...However, there's much of interest - all the songs are about love or sex, and on several Screamin' Jay duets with an intriguingly sensual female vocalist, notably on two pornohumorous songs. "Bite It", based on the Mar-Keys famous "Last Night", is the funniest, featuring the lady on very rude backup noises that suggest that she indeed has the bit in between her teeth, and "I Wanta Know (What You Do Down There)" is about the same geographical region.
Screamin' Jay also subverts the ballad "Goodnight My Love" by implying he is having dealings with under-age jailbait. "Move Me", too, generates a strongly sexual groove.
To sum up, Screamin' Jay didn't just write "I Put A Spell On You". Digest these tracks and you will realize that: -
Screamin' Jay is a great singer, moving easily between Blues, Soul, Billy Eckstine and Spike Jones.
He is a great lyricist, exploring areas where most songwriters usually fear to tread.
He is a great humorist, both in writing and performing his own words and subverting the words and music of others. Listen to his loveably insulting mimicry in the "How do they talk?" sequence from "Feat Of The Mau Mau", then try to find his earlier recordings of "I Love Paris" and "Hong Kong" and you'll see what I mean.
He is a great screamer. His music is a cry from the streets of the mind. He is there to put you wise, and he isn't taking any shit.

Ignore these records and their philosophy and you will be missing an important stage in your development. Luckily, Screamin' Jay is still with us. Be proud to have met him. Tell your friends. The Cavaleros "Atomic! The Album" 2015

Coming fast on the crest of their Banzai Pipeline EP Victoria’s The Cavaleros drop their new full length release Atomic! The Album. Fully immersed in the surf rock groove The Cavaleros embrace all the swagger and style with precise execution and a rebel spirit. On Atomic! The Cavaleros spit out ten fiery surf instrumentals delivered with blistering force and dripping with rock n roll bravado...
...This fine tuned trio slather their music with buckets of sustain and heaping servings of Mexican spice. German “Sandy” Cavalero lays down a relentless jungle beat over Johnny Cavalero’s pounding undertones while producer and gang leader Eddie Cavalero unleashes a blistering five string assault that pays a complex and passionate tribute to the world of surf.
From their matching jailhouse stripes and mariachi jackets, to the cool album cartoon graphics, The Cavaleros have this whole thing dialed in. It’s Link Wray meets The Stooges at a bullfight on Waikiki Beach. Switchblade sharp and burning rubber, Atomic! The Album is sure to satisfy anyone with a taste for rockabilly, psyched out garage rock, and salty beach party ballistics. High octane and seriously shacked, with Atomic! The Album The Cavaleros leave you blissed, breathless, and totally noodled - Review by Dave O Rama 'BC Musician Magazine'

Screamin' Jay Hawkins "Feast of the mau mau" 1988 - DISC 1

"I hear those Voices again... I Smell Nookie!"... at least that's what I always thought he said... - BenT
Liner notes by Pete Brown 1988
The wildman stops pounding out the blues on the piano and strolls over to where a long stick with a greenish-white skull on top stands. He picks up the stick, lights a cigarette, and places it in the skull's mouth. He regards the skull with a mixture of delight and disdain as it appears to puff the cigarette. A strange French band plays uneasy riffs in the background. Screamin' Jay Hawkins is in town
• Eating a wax feather sandwich • In the middle of • Nineteen hundred and yesterday
Some of us in the Beat poetry movement in the late fifties / early sixties, under the influence of various forbidden or destructive liquids and substances, used to play a game invented by Corso, Kerouac etc called "wordslings". We'd make up weirder and weirder juxtapositions of images and sentiments, trying to outweird each other, with pauses for laughter. A kind of surrealist contest or exercise. Later we would incorporate some of our findings in our work. We didn't know then but Screamin' Jay Hawkins had done it all already, without anything in his bloodstream but his own blood.
• Yesterday's comin' back tomorrow • Is is now
Let's face it, individuality is a pretty scarce commodity in these days of clip-on weirdness kits and midi'd chestwigs. People don't even make their own records anymore. Courage is even scarcer, because Courage and Corporate don't mix. That's why it's great to have these two albums, long favourites of mine, back in circulation, to stretch and disturb the minds of another generation of music lovers.
I'm not going into the history. The best of these performances are timeless and speak for themselves, standing proudly for themselves, standing proudly beside the work of Slim Gaillard, Eddie Harris, Sleepy John Estes, Victoria Spivey and Wynonie Harris (well, whoever wrote his songs).
These blasts put the most savage punk bands to shame, and rival the fiercest social and sexual commentators of our time.
• A pain called • "Had to eat more" • Made me get a job
and
• I've been hurt • Till I love the pain
I don't hesitate to say that WHAT THAT IS is a masterpiece. What album these days can boast a track like "The Feast Of The Mau Mau"?
• Cut the fat off the back of a baboon • Boil it down to a pound in a spoon • Scoop the eyes from a fly flying backwards • Take the jaws and the paws off a 'coon...
This should be compulsory listening for all white South Africans. And it gets heavier - how about the sheer graphic horror of "Constipation Blues" ("nobody ever made a record about real pain") with the great Plas Johnson's baritone sax expressively suggesting dark dysfunctions of the digestive system?
WHAT THAT IS was recorded live in a Hollywood club over two days with a changing personnel with more interesting contributions from Johnson and from the legendary British pianist Graham Bond (also signed to Mercury at the time), jazz guitarist Herb Ellis and the excellent Earl palmer on drums. I wish I'd been there. Just to see the audience. There are few albums in the history of obscurely popular music less uninhibited than this. The second album, BECAUSE IS IN YOUR MIND / ARMPITRUBBER (both titles appear on the original sleeve) contains, on first impressions, more conventional material. It's efficiently produced by Huey Meaux, with a solid studio band and some nice horn charts. It's more soul than blues-orientated especially on such numbers as "Tryin' To Reach My Goal" and "Our Love". - to be continued...

"BLUES FOR CUBA" A New Kind Of Mambo Vol. 35

“Behind the bar was the proprietor, a young fellow who instantly ran out when we told him we wanted to hear mambo music and came back with a stack of records, mostly by Perez Prado, and put them on over the loudspeaker…
...In an instant all the city of Gregoria could hear the good times going on at the Sala de Baile. In the hall itself the din of the music – for this is the real way to play a jukebox and what it was originally for – was so tremendous that it shattered Dean and Stan and me for a moment in the realization that we had never dared to play music as loud as we wanted, and this was how loud we wanted. It blew and shuddered directly at us. In a few minutes half that portion of town was at the windows, watching the Americanos dance with the gals. They all stood, side by side with the cops, on the dirt sidewalk, leaning in with indifference and casualness. ’More Mambo Jambo’, ’Chattanooga de Mambo’, ’Mambo Numero Ocho’ - all these tremendous numbers resounded and flared in the golden, mysterious afternoon like the sounds you expect to hear on the last day of the world and the Second Coming. The trumpets seemed so loud I thought they could hear them clear out in the desert, where the trumpets had originated anyway. The drums were mad. The mambo beat is the conga beat from Congo, the river of Africa and the world; it’s really the world beat. Oom-ta, ta-poo-poom. The piano montunos showered down on us from the speaker. The cries of the leader were like great gasps in the air. The final trumpet choruses that came with drum climaxes on conga and bongo drums, on the great mad Chattanooga record, froze Dean in his tracks for a moment till he shuddered and sweated; then when the trumpets bit the drowsy air with their quivering echoes, like a cavern’s or a cave’s, his eyes grew large and round a s though seeing the devil, and he closed them tight. I myself was shaken like a puppet by it; I heard the trumpets flail the light I had seen and trembled in my boots.
On the fast ‘Mambo Jambo’ we danced frantically with the girls. Through our deliriums we began to discern their varying personalities. They were great girls. Strangely the wildest one was half Indian, half white, and came from Venezuela, and only eighteen. She looked as if she came from a good family. What she was doing whoring in Mexico at that age and with that tender cheek and fair aspect, God knows. Some awful grief had driven her to it. She drank beyond all bounds. She threw down drinks when it seemed she was about to chuck up the last. She overturned glasses continually, the idea also being to make us spend as much money as possible. Wearing her flimsy housecoat in broad afternoon, she frantically danced with Dean and clung about his neck and begged and begged for everything. Dean was so stoned he didn’t know what to start with, girls or mambo” - Jack Kerouac “On the Road”

MICKEY BAKER "Session Man & Performer" Vol. 3

Here is great collection of Mickey Baker's great work. (He just passed away November 27, 2012.) If you asked me, and I know you didn't, but if you did, I'd say Mickey "Guitar" Baker is the greatest guitarist in rock'n'roll history. Bob Quine agreed with me. (The Hound Blog)
Of all the guitarists who helped transform rhythm & blues into rock & roll, Mickey Baker is one of the very most important, ranking almost on the level of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. (Allmusic)

His Master's Voice / Monsoon "His Master's Voice versus Monsoon" 2018 + "Versions" 2018 - 7"/45rpm

Long overdue, the present collaboration represents a new sound for His Master's Voice and clear entry point for Monsoon...
...Here we find a neurogenetic mind-meld wherein a connection between the arid landscape of desert rock and the submarine sounds of surf music is made. The apex of Spaghetti Western cinema scores remakes this dipole into a triangle, where both music forms can draw a line from its compositional style. One hears echos of fuzz and blown speaker cones in the melodies of Once Upon a Time in the West just the same as one hears the wailing of an old Mosrite guitar. As this mutual reference point recedes in time, it sweetens in our ears and reddens in our eyes. Nostalgia isn't really our thing, but tradition is tradition. Now hear this!

Screamin' Jay Hawkins "The Whammee" 1953-55

A long overdue re-press for this unique collection of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' finest seminal early performances, all beautifully re-mastered in Maumau-sonic sound in The Vault Of Horror.
Screamin' Jay Hawkins was ...um… an eccentric man, who wore outlandish outfits, (Leopardskin and red leather were a favourite combo from the 1940's on), claimed to practice voodoo and carried a skull named Henry on stage with him every time he sprang from his casket to perform his amazing music. His I Put a Spell on You (1956) remains rock and roll's most singular recording, and was selected as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that shaped Rock and Roll. The song sets out the template for the man's career : big-voiced Hawkins singing an impassioned appeal to a lost love or some other banal thing. Very quickly, however, the performance becomes something unique: Hawkins seems positively demented as he sings, threatens wildly, screams, grunts and groans, and sounds utterly demoniacal in reclaiming the lady or whatever as his own, as he does here again and again...
Hawkins' legendary theatrical act was one of the first shock rock performances, and was the progenitor of much that came later in rock and roll, including George Clinton, Arthur Brown, Alice Cooper, Dr. John, Ted Nugent, Black Sabbath, Screaming Lord Sutch, Warren Zevon, and Marilyn Manson, among the many who vied for Hawkins' title as a rock and roll madman.
His starring roles in Jim Jarmusch's films Stranger Than Paradise and Mystery Train led to other movie performances such as Álex de la Iglesia's Perdita Durango and Bill Duke's adaptation of Chester Himes' A Rage In Harlem. His song Frenzy being featured in "The X Files", touring with The Clash, Nick Cave and Tom Waits also kept our man firmly in the news until his alleged death!! So, here we have a Voodootastic selection of Screamin'Jay's finest early performances; to delight a terrified audience once more, in-cluding many unissued performances!

"FANTASIA" A New Kind Of Mambo Vol. 34

Mambo is a Latin dance of Cuba which was developed in the 1940s when the music genre of the same name became popular throughout Latin America…
...The original ballroom dance which emerged in Cuba and Mexico was related to the danzón, albeit faster and less rigid. In the United States, it replaced rhumba as the most fashionable Latin dance. Later on, with the advent of salsa and its more sophisticated dance, a new type of mambo dance including breaking steps was popularized in New York. This form received the name of "salsa on 2", "mambo on 2" or "modern mambo". - wiki
